the story takes place in Berlin Germany, in a small hut in the marshy lands, the dialogue takes place in petersen's hut, near his fire place, inside the city of Berlin, petersen walks the streets of Berlin every day and waits for night fall to go to his hut so no one would see where he lives unless he took them there, its the year 1697, the weather is like a nice spring day meaning the temperature is any where from 60-70 degrees.

22 May : Corpus Christi.
15 Aug : Assumption.
3 Oct : Day of German Unity.
31 Oct : Day of Reformation.
1 Nov : All Saints’ Day.
above is a list of which holidays are celebrated in germany from may 1st to November 1st. i picked these days because thats when more holidays happen which would make more gatherings for petersen to go to, to find the wife that will stay with him.
